After completing her academic training in law, Daisy, 24, founded Freegal, a website providing free legal advice. Daisy recognised the value of post-graduate legal students' expertise, and by creating Freegal made it available to anyone in need of advice, regardless of income or social standing. The judges admired both her innovative idea and her ability to turn it into a successful social enterprise.

  • The vision of Freegal is to make the law accessible to all irrespective of income or social standing enables people to have the self- knowledge to make choices. Freegal is operated using post- graduate legal students who will be seeking training contracts to become solicitors. As such, their knowledge is to the highest level, but without the cost involved in visiting a solicitor. There is also a benefit to the freegal advisors as they can use their time working on Freegal to demonstrate to potential employers the practical advice they have been giving.. It is clear from the questions raised by Freegal clients there are a wide range of issues and problems they have, which are not being addressed elsewhere, e.g domestic violence, partnership splits, housing and social issues. Freegal has been able to guide people to potential solutions at no cost to themselves. Freegal is currently developing links with a number of universities, where the potential training benefits is recognised. Some universities run similar pro-bone advice. However, this is limited because of exam workloads, students being term-time and being locality based. Being web based with the advisors working on a range of subjects, advise is national and available at all times. The website has links to all major governmental agencies and Depatments, all of which have been properly sought and approved.
